Installing Dionex Devices
Dionex ESA Model 582/584 HPLC Pumps: Installation

The driver was tested with ESA pump model 584, firmware version 584 V 1.01.

Restrictions:

No flow ramps, only step-like changes of flow possible

 

What is required?

License:

Timebase Class 1

Connection:

  • A free 9-pin RS-232 port must be available on the Chromeleon Server PC (or on a Multi-COM card).

  • RS-232 cable (9-pin to 9-pin)

  • Fiber Optic Data Transmission Cable

  • Fiber Optic-RS232 Converter (shipped with the pump; ESA part no. 70-4053, "582 Pump Fiber Optic-to-RS232 Converter & Cable")

Control Panel:

To control the instrument, use

  • panel tabsets (refer to How to:  Controlling Devices from the Panel Tabset)

    OR

  • ESAPump.pan from the
    Dionex Templates\Panels\Dionex_LC
    folder in the Browser

 

Hardware Installation

Device Connection:

To establish communication between the pump and Chromeleon connect the RS-232 and the Fiber Optic cable as follows:

Connection of the Fiber Optic Cable:

  1. On the rear of the pump, remove the caps from the Remote Connector.

  2. Insert the Fiber Optic cable into the Connector (the cable should click into place).

  3. Connect the other end of the fiber optic cable to the Fiber Optic-RS232 Converter.

Connection of the RS-232 cable:

  1. Connect the RS-232 cable to the Fiber Optic-RS232 Converter.

  2. Insert the other end of the cable to the free RS-232 port on the Chromeleon Server PC.

 Note:  

The pump cannot be controlled via a UCI interface.

Device Settings:

The communication parameters are set at the factory as follows:

Baud rate: 9600

Databits: 8

Stopbits: 1

Parity: EVEN

Handshake: None

Verify that the pump is correctly installed and configured in the Server Configuration program and that the instrument itself is switched to remote operation:

  • Turn on the pump.

  • Press FUNC key repeatedly until the System menu is shown. Press ENTER to access the Local/Remote Mode screen:

  • Select 0 (default) for remote operation and press ENTER.

  • Press the FUNC key until the Setting System Control Parameter screen is accessed:

  • Enter 5 and press ENTER.

All commands are now executed via Chromeleon.

Tip:

Software Installation

  1. In the Chromeleon Server Configuration, add the driver to a timebase. For details, see Adding, Configuring or Deleting Devices. After you add the driver, the configuration dialog opens automatically.

  2. On each configuration tab page, select the desired settings. For information about the settings on a page, click Help or press F1. On the ESA Pump Configuration page, in the COM Port list, select the serial interface port to which the pump is connected (i.e., the COM port on the Chromeleon computer to which the RS-232 serial cable is connected).
